Chapter 18: Hunting Party

In the third week of January two Amarillo men came onto the Tarver north pasture with rifles, and Hoyt stepped in front of me.

I was standing at the fence by the draw with a feed bucket, in Jolene's old barn coat.

The Dually crawled up the section road with its lights off.

It stopped at the gate, and two men got out with scoped rifles over their arms.

I knew them both.

They had stood behind Royce in the yard on the morning he claimed me, and they had not said a word then either.

"Morning, Miss Ellerbe," said the taller one.

"Royce sent us to look at your calf problem."

Hoyt crossed the frozen ground without hurrying and put himself between me and the gate.

His back filled the whole view.

I could not see a thing past him.

"Walk off my land," he said.

"Mr. Tarver, we're only here to put down a rogue," said the shorter man.

"It's the Panhandle rule. You'd do the same."

"I'd do it myself," Hoyt said.

"I'll do it on my own pasture, at my own time."

I heard boots on the frozen road behind us.

Dub came first, limping, with a shotgun over his arm and no smile at all.

Arlo came next, and the buyer, the sheriff and the preacher, and they fanned out along the fence until they stood in a line.

Six men and six rifles, all grounded, none of them pointed.

The Amarillo men looked down the line and shifted their feet.
