Chapter 9: The Table

I sat on the long mesquite table with three men standing around me.

My palm was flat on the underside of it, feeling the carved names.

The sheriff, the preacher and the cattle buyer had gone home a quarter hour ago.

Hoyt had told them that what came next was for the three of them to hear.

Nobody had asked what it was.

Now Hoyt stood at the head of the table with his arms folded.

Dub leaned on the counter, not smiling, and Arlo stood by the stove with his hands in his pockets.

"You don't have to answer him," Hoyt said.

"You don't have to earn a seat, either."

"I told you so the first night," Hoyt said.

"I know you did," I said.

"I'm not earning it."

"I'm choosing it."

My fingers had found a rough little letter on the table's underside, then another.

D.R., it said, in a boy's cut.

A.B. was beside it.

"You carved your names," I said.

"Everyone who is kept here does," Hoyt said.

"Mine isn't there."

"Not yet," he said.

His voice had gone rough.

I let go of the table and slid my hands to the buttons of my shirt.

"I choose you," I said.

"Hoyt, and Dub, and Arlo."

"All three of you. Right now, at this table."

Nobody moved.

Dub let out a long, slow whistle.

"Well," he said.

"I'd say that's an offer."

He pushed off the counter, and Arlo took his hands out of his pockets, and the three of them came to me.

Dub reached me first.

He cupped my face and kissed me, hot and deep, with his mustache brushing my lip.

Arlo stepped in at my right side, and his mouth landed on my throat, soft and slow.

Hoyt stood at my left and laid his huge hand flat on my back, and left it there.

I was surrounded.

I had never in my life felt so safe.

"Take it off, darlin'," Dub said against my mouth.

They undressed me together.

Dub dealt with the buttons, and Arlo drew off my jeans.

Hoyt lifted me bodily and held me in the air while it was done.

They set me on the table bare.

The wood was cool and smooth under my bottom, and the kitchen lights shone on my skin.
