Chapter 10: The Ice Storm Cabin

Marit's POV

The storm hit the north ridge cabin an hour after Anders and I got there.

We had come to check the border markers.

The rogue scout had said the gate would open, and I wanted every other door in the territory counted.

Torben was meant to meet us at dusk.

By dusk the snow was coming sideways, and the wind took the cabin door out of my hand and slammed it.

"He won't get through that," Anders said, fighting the bolt home.

"He'll have turned back at the river."

"Then we're here till morning."

The cabin was one room, with a stove, a wood box, a table, and a single iron bed with a grey wool blanket.

Anders looked at the bed.

I looked at the bed.

"I'll take the floor," he said.

"You're twice my size. You'll take the floor and the whole room."

"Marit."

"There's a rule about sleeping, and it's a good rule."

I pulled the blanket off the bed and threw it at his chest.

"Rule one."

He caught it, and a corner of his mouth went up.

We fed the stove and ate cold bread and cheese from my pack.

The wind screamed under the eaves, and every few minutes the whole cabin shuddered.

By nine, the cold had begun to creep up through the boards.

I sat on the floor with my back to the stove, and I felt it start in my chest.

A warm, high pull.

My wolf was awake and restless, and she wanted out.

"Don't," I said under my breath, and she did not listen.

Across the room, Anders had gone completely still.
