Chapter 24: The Name She Chose
Three weeks later, the last snow of the year fell on the Moon Hall, and I walked into it on my own.
Nobody led me.
I wore my scout's boots, my grandmother's blue wool dress, and my braid pinned up with a sprig of dried plum blossom that Torben had stolen from the orchard.
The hall was full again.
Three hundred wolves stood along the log walls, and their breath steamed in the stove-light, just as it had on Midwinter morning.
This time they were smiling.
Anders waited by the registry table in a plain grey coat, with no ring on his hand.
He did not look at me like a duty.
He looked at me like a man who had been told the sun would rise and did not trust it yet.
The eldest elder held out the pen.
"Marit Solberg," he said. "Write the name of the one you register as mate."
My heart was going hard.
I took the pen.
The line on the form said *Mate to be registered*, and it was the same line, on the same table, with the whole hall watching in dead silence.
I wrote the name in my clearest hand.
Marit Solberg.
The elder read it aloud.
"The Luna's seat is not what I'm taking," I said, before anyone else could speak. "I'm registering as his mate. I hold the gate, and he holds the pack, and neither of us owns the other."
"Written and witnessed," the elder said, and his voice shook with a laugh.
The hall roared.
Anders took my face in both his hands in front of everyone and kissed me.
