Chapter 18: Backup

"Where's my binder?" I said.

The replacement doctor sat down at my desk.

"I haven't seen a binder."

"Black. Two inches thick. It was right there this morning."

"Then I suppose someone moved it." He opened the station laptop. "I'll be reviewing all medical records under Wexler's protocol, Dr. Bevan. Any personal notes you've kept about certified supplies are company property."

"They're patient records."

"Then they'll be very safe with me."

He didn't look up again.

I walked out before I said something that ended up in his report.

Boone was in the comms shack with his feet on the ham desk.

I told him.

He took his feet down.

Then he reached under the desk, past the BRINKLEY, HANDS OFF sign, and pulled out his battered radio laptop.

"Every Sunday since they cut the email," he said. "After the last call. You'd go to bed, and I'd go back to the clinic and take a picture of every new page."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because Wexler owns the satellite." He opened a folder. "And if the satellite went, I wanted to be able to send it off the sky a page at a time."
