"The Wexler Heart Pavilion," I repeated.

"Ten feet high," Gwen said. "You can see it from the freeway. I've been driving the long way so I don't have to."

I looked down at the signature.

Six years I'd worked under that man.

He'd shaken my hand at my residency graduation and said the ER was lucky to have me.

"How much?" I asked.

"Forty million, the paper said. Over five years."

"Five years," I said. "That's a popular number."

Boone took the letter out of my hand, folded it, and put it on the nightstand face down.

"Eat something," he said. "Then be angry."

At the airport the next morning, he walked me to my gate and didn't go to his.

"You're going to miss your plane," I said.

"I'm going to Montana first."

I looked up at him.

"Choteau," he said. "Seven years I haven't been back. I'm going to go stand where the barn was. Then I'm coming to you."

"You don't have to do that for me."

"I'm not doing it for you." He tugged the end of my scarf. "I'm doing it so when I get to you, I'm all there."
