Chapter 17: The Green Dress Comes Off
We did not go home.
My mother had stayed behind at the club with Dale, laughing with the chairman, and Gabriel said he would not sleep in a house where she could be listening.
Nico took us to his hotel.
It was a suite on the twelfth floor with a wall of glass and the whole stadium district lit up below.
He locked the door, pulled the curtains half shut and poured three glasses of wine.
Nobody drank.
"She has a deadline," Nico said. "So do we. Sunday at halftime she plays the video for the club. We are going to be there first."
"How?" Gabriel said.
"I have the files. I do not yet have the room."
"I'll find it," I said.
"Later," Nico said. "Tonight you have another job."
He looked at the green dress.
He looked at Gabriel.
"Tonight you take that off her, Gabe. Slowly. You walked out on it in May."
Gabriel set down his glass.
I had known him for three years, and I had never seen his face go like that.
He crossed the carpet and stood behind me and found the zipper at the nape of my neck.
He drew it down one tooth at a time.
"I walked out because of this dress," he said into my ear. "Now it's coming off."
The green silk slid from my shoulders and pooled at my feet.
I stood there in my underwear, and I heard Nico sit down in the armchair by the window.
"Go on," he said quietly. "I'll watch until she asks me to stop watching."
Gabriel lifted me onto the end of the bed.
He knelt on the carpet and put his hands on my knees and spread them.
