Chapter 24: Kept
Nikos set me on the butcher block with the Easter lamb still warm on the stove behind him.
The last of the guests had gone down the front steps at midnight with foil parcels in their arms.
Yiayia had kissed me on both cheeks.
Hugh Cullen had saluted me with a red egg.
My father had shaken Nikos's hand and held it a second too long.
Now the house was ours, and the kitchen smelled of rosemary.
Nikos stood between my knees with his hands at my waist.
"Same table," I said.
"Same table."
"You were afraid to touch me."
"I was not afraid," Nikos said. "I was careful."
"You were afraid."
"Yes," he said, with a half smile. "A little."
I took his face in my hands and kissed him.
It was slow and deep, and he tasted of wine and lemon.
I put my arms round his neck.
He lifted me an inch off the wood and set me down again, testing my weight.
He still did that.
I hoped he always would.
"Take off my dress," I said.
He found the zipper at my back and drew it down, one tooth at a time.
The dress slid from my shoulders.
I had worn the red set under it on purpose.
I watched his eyes go down it and come back up.
"You're wearing it for me," he said.
"I'm wearing it for me. You're just here."
He laughed against my throat.
"Now you," I said.
I unbuttoned his shirt, slowly, and pushed it off his shoulders.
I put my mouth on the old white scar along his ribs, and he exhaled.
I undid his belt and his trousers and drew them down, and he stepped out of them.
He stood in his own kitchen in his shorts, hard against the cotton, with the lamb steaming behind him.
I started to laugh.
"What?" he said.
"Nothing. I'm happy."
He kissed me again.
He kissed my collarbone, the swell of my breast above the lace, the hollow between them.
He took his time.
His mouth moved lower, across my ribs and my stomach, slow and open.
He went down on his knees on the tile where he had knelt the first night.
He looked up at me.
"Do you remember?" he said.
"Every second," I said.
"You told me you didn't mind how little you minded."
"I remember," I said.
"I've been waiting to answer that," he said.
"Answer it with your mouth," I said.
He gave me a look I felt in my knees.
