Chapter 28: Gran's Letter

I got dressed faster than I'd ever dressed in my life.

By the time my father reached the top of the trail, I was at the plank table.

My boots were unlaced and my hair was full of frost.

Abel came down the stairs behind me and stood at my shoulder.

The crew went quiet.

The cook kept the griddle going, because the cook would keep the griddle going through the end of the world.

My father stopped at the edge of the rock.

He looked at the four new cabins and the porches Lowell had swept.

He looked at the copy of the weather board pinned up in the cook's window.

Then he looked at me.

"Faye," he said.

"Dad."

He held out the envelope.

It was cream colored and soft at the corners.

My name was on the front in Gran's neat slanting pencil.

For Faye. After.

"She gave it to me at the hospital in Missoula," he said. "Two days before she died."

"She told me to give it to you after the funeral."

I didn't take it yet.

"That was two years ago."

"Yes."

"Did you read it?"

"Yes."

He didn't look away, and I'll give him that.

"It says the ridge is yours," he said. "Your name, nobody else's. It says the camera is yours, and the Seer line, and that you were never to let anybody talk you out of either one."
