Chapter 13: Every Word

Nobody in the bar moved.

Chase was still up on his chair, grinning, his phone held against his chest.

Kat had my sleeve in her fist.

I looked at Luc.

"Truck," he said. His voice was barely there. "Please. Not in here."

He picked his gear bag up off the floor.

He didn't look at Chase once.

He walked out of that bar with his back to him, the same way he'd skated away from him at the Barn.

I followed him up the steps into the cold.

Behind us Chase called, "Tell her about the bench, Thibodeau!"

Somebody laughed. Somebody else told him to shut up.

The truck was parked on Comm Ave under a streetlight.

Luc got in behind the wheel and didn't start it.

I got in the other side.

He put both hands on the wheel. His right wrist was swollen where Chase had slashed it.

"February fifteenth," he said. "Your freshman year. The day after you put it in his bag."

I didn't say anything.

"Practice ended at four. We were all in the room. He found it in the side pocket when he went for his tape."

He told it plainly, the way he'd tell me about a game.

"He stood up on the bench in the middle of the room. He read it in that voice. The one tonight."
