Chapter 17: The Fundraiser

Cal came down the back stairs barefoot, in yesterday's jeans, yawning.

He stopped when he saw my face.

I didn't look at the top of his head. I held out the card.

He read it. His jaw went tight.

"Ask me," he said.

"Did you know?"

"My mother called me Thursday. She asked. I said no."

He handed the card back. "I didn't tell you because I said no. I thought that was the end of it."

"It's printed on a card, Cal."

"I can see that." He rubbed his face. "She printed it anyway. That's my mother. She thinks if it's on paper, it happened."

I put the invitation down on the steel counter, face up, and turned on the first oven.

"I'm not standing up for him," Cal said. "Not after what he did to you. Not with her."

I thought about it while the oven ticked.

"I think you should."

He stared at me.

"Your father's going to be there," I said. "He said sorry to my face on that roof."

"He's going to sit in the front row anyway, because it's his son."

"So?"

"So if you don't stand up there, it's because of me. Your mother will say it at every Thanksgiving until she dies."
