Chapter 22: The Verdict
The oldest elder asked Carlo to answer Gina.
He had no smile left to lend the room.
"She planned the cup," he said.
"And you planned the man with a knife," Ada replied.
Carlo looked toward the guards along the wall.
They had already stepped away from him.
The empty gun still hung from his hand.
I crossed the floor and took it from him.
He let me, because every eye in the hall was on his fingers.
"On my birthday," I said, "you used your gray silk tie."
Carlo laughed, too loud.
"She dreamed it."
"You knot it twice, because your father taught you on fishing line."
The laugh died in his mouth.
Gina made a small sound behind the guard who held her.
Nobody in that hall had ever heard about the fishing line.
Carlo's face told them it was true.
Matteo moved.
He didn't run.
He crossed the hall in four long steps, took Carlo by the throat, and drove him back onto the long table.
Coffee cups went over and rolled to the floor.
