Chapter 7: In Front of Them

Carlo had brought six witnesses for a performance.

Matteo brought the whole supper table onto the front steps.

Ada came with her cane and stood beside me.

Carlo smiled up at the house.

"Elena, come down. You told me you wanted out."

That much was true.

I went down three steps and stopped above him.

"I wanted out of my marriage," I said.

The street fell still.

Matteo stayed behind me.

I felt the distance without turning.

"And you told me I could have you."

Carlo lifted his hands.

"You can. Right now."

He offered me the same broad smile he wore on my birthday.

I could nearly hear Gina telling me to trust it.

"You wanted Matteo's gates," I said.

His smile tightened.

"You knew his guard changes. You knew Ada's supper hour."

"You told me those things because you loved me."

"I told you because I wanted to hurt my husband."

Matteo moved behind me, but I lifted a hand.

"I was wrong. It doesn't make what I did disappear."

Carlo looked past me at Matteo.

"Hear that? Your wife used me to make you jealous."

"No," I said. "I was with you. I chose that."

I heard Ada's breath catch behind me.

My face burned, but I kept my eyes on Carlo.
