Chapter 18: The Ballroom
"Why?" I asked him.
But Brennan had already turned and gone down the narrow stairs.
I didn't sleep.
At four I went down to the ballroom in my socks and walked the floor I'd leveled, board by board.
Three hundred white chairs in rows. An aisle of peonies. A little stage at the far end, where the band would play later, with an arch of white roses on it for the vows.
Above it hung a big screen, for the slideshow Margaux had made of their love story.
I'd hung my moth chandelier over all of it. Every crystal washed by hand.
At five Corbin found me there, sitting on the edge of the stage.
He sat down next to me without a word.
"Front row," he said finally.
"Front row."
"Do you want me beside you?"
"I want you beside me for everything," I said. "Today's just the first one."
The ceremony was at four.
At three fifty, I walked down the aisle in my good black dress, the one I'd bought myself with the owner's first check, and sat in the front row on the bride's side.
Corbin sat down beside me.
The whispering went back through three hundred people.
Honora sat across the aisle in the groom's front row, in pale gray silk and the pearls.
The owner sat in the back row, in her wicker chair, which the bartender had carried in. The housekeeper stood behind her.
The music started.
Margaux came down the aisle on her father's arm, in a gown with a train so long two little girls had to carry it.
She was filming herself on a phone tucked in her bouquet.
Brennan stood under the arch of roses in a black tuxedo.
His right hand was bandaged white.
He didn't watch his bride come down the aisle.
He watched me.
Margaux held her phone up so her bouquet could see.
