Chapter 18: Belt
"That's a recorder," I said.
"It's been on since two o'clock."
Brady's face went through three expressions in a second.
The first was blank, and the second was a kind of rage.
The third was the old grin, the one he put on to talk his way out of a ticket.
"You set me up," he said.
"You said it yourself.
"I left the ad up and I said it three times."
He backed up two steps, and his boot hit the leg of a folding chair.
The curtain behind me moved.
Dane came out of the back room with his shirt unbuttoned and his hat in his hand.
At the same moment the front door opened, and a deputy in a tan uniform walked in out of the sun.
He was a wide quiet man of fifty with a thermos in one fist.
He had come in from his car at the end of the block.
He walked up the long floor without a word and stood at the foot of the stage.
He looked at Brady and waited.
"Morning, Brady," Dane said.
"It's afternoon," Brady said.
His voice cracked.
"Mr. Kneupper, I can explain.
"I was joking.
"I was messing with her.
"I don't have a cousin."
"You told her you did," Dane said.
"You told her what he pays you, and what he's promised you.
"You told her you put her in my house on purpose, and what the camera was for.
"Putting a spy program on a computer and watching a house through it is a crime in the state of Texas, Brady."
"I bought that laptop.
"It was mine."
"You gave it to her," Dane said.
"You'll find out how that counts," the deputy said.
His voice was slow and mild.
"I'd like you to come outside with me.
"You can stand in the shade while I call the county attorney."
"I haven't done anything."
