Chapter 14: The Chairman

Joelle's POV

The video had two million views by Monday morning.

Maud met me at the elevator with her phone held out.

"Tansy Rudge, everybody," she said. "'I read his texts about you. I laughed at all of them.' Somebody put music under it."

"Please stop."

"Somebody put a violin under it, Joelle."

"Is the whole floor watching it?"

"The whole building. The guy in security did the voice."

I laughed, and then I stopped, because the elevator doors behind me opened on Ivo.

He wore the dark gray suit from the lunch.

There were dark marks under his eyes.

"Brandish," he said. "The chairman wants us at eight."

"Both of us?"

"Both."

"Then you were told, too."

"Last night." His eyes went to Maud and back. "Not here."

We rode up eleven floors without speaking.

I stood against one wall and he stood against the other.

The chairman's office faced the lake. He was a heavy, white-haired man with a pen in his hand, and he did not stand.

"Sit," he said. "Both of you."

We sat.

"Ms. Brandish, you transferred here three weeks ago. In that time, I have had two phone calls about you."

"From whom?"

"A friend of twenty years." He turned the pen over. "He says you are carrying on with your team lead. He says you are unstable, and that you stalked his son for five years."

I looked at Ivo.

His face did not move, but the knuckles of his right hand had gone white on his knee.

"The friend is my father," Ivo said.

"I know whose father he is."

"Then you know why he's calling."

"I know he has put eleven million into this company over twenty years." The chairman set the pen down. "So I will say this plainly. I would like one of you to leave."

My stomach dropped.

"Ms. Brandish, I can offer you four months' pay and a good reference. Mr. Sandberg, I would like you to stay."
