Chapter 25: Served
Joelle's POV
We reached the Coastal Institute at noon on Thursday.
Ivo parked across two spaces and did not care.
On the drive he had made three calls, and he had not said what any of them were for.
"Stay behind me," he said.
"No."
"Then stay beside me."
"Better."
The glass doors opened on a lobby full of staff eating lunch off paper plates.
Hugh stood in the middle of them in his institute fleece, with a man in a gray suit at his elbow.
Tansy sat on the bench behind him with a tissue in her fist.
Her eyes were already red.
"Jo," Hugh said, loud enough for the whole room. "I wish you'd called first."
"You filed a police report."
"I had no choice." He shook his head sadly at the staff. "I tried to handle it kindly."
"With a lawyer?"
"This is the institute's counsel," Hugh said. "He's here to serve you."
The man in the gray suit stepped forward and held out a stapled packet.
I did not take it.
Ivo did.
He read the first page standing up, with every person in the lobby watching.
"Eleven emails," he said. "Sent from a Tidewell Newford address to a lab called Brinemark. Each one attaches a piece of the grant text."
"Dated the fourteenth," Hugh said. "While she still worked for the company that sells to our competitors."
"The fourteenth was twelve days after Joelle left Newford."
Hugh's smile held.
"She had remote access."
"She did not." Ivo turned the packet over. "Tidewell's HR director closed every one of her Newford accounts the afternoon she resigned. I called her from the highway."
He took out his phone and held it toward the lawyer.
