Chapter 17: Sworn

My lawyer called back at six that evening, while I was standing at Kat's stove not making dinner.

"A sworn declaration came in this afternoon," she said. "From a Wyatt Mercer, dated yesterday. Four pages."

I turned off the burner.

"He says he sent you every photograph," she said. "He says he saw your husband film you at a workshop door and in a parking lot, and he saw him sign the Bluebird lease in April."

"He put his name on that."

"He did, and it's in a court file now. Cory's lawyer will call him a man who harassed you. It's useful to us anyway, because he's the first witness with no stake."

"Does he know that?"

"Ms. Whitaker," she said, "he told the clerk he knew exactly what it cost."

I went out without my coat.

Kat caught me at the door, saw my face, and handed me her car keys and the coat.

"Dented Corolla," she said. "Don't tell it anything. It gets emotional."

The green door was unlocked, and the shop was lit by a single lamp.

He was at the bench, planing the edge of the finished walnut table.

He saw me, put the plane down, and wiped his hands on his jeans.

"Your lawyer called you," he said.

"She did."

"I wanted to tell you first."

"You didn't tell me at all."

"No."

I walked across the floor and stopped an arm's length from him.

He had not shaved, and the split in his lip had healed to a thin white line.

"You said it only needed one sentence," he said. "I wrote it. It took four pages, but it's in there."

"You signed your name to it."

"I did. Oak Park may cancel the table. Half my customers will look me up."
