Chapter 5: The Armory

"Wrist," said Piers.

"Your wrist, Highness.

"It's a sword, not a teacup."

"It feels like a very heavy teacup," said Florian.

The three of them were in the armory under the east stair, with a rack of practice blades.

Snow-light came in through the high windows.

Florian stood in his shirtsleeves with the blade held out in front of him.

He had lost his spectacles on a bench.

He looked ridiculous and flushed and happy.

Evander leaned on a pillar with his arms folded, because if he didn't fold them he would put them around the prince.

"Thumb along the guard," said Piers.

"Sir Evander, show him."

"He's got it."

"He's got a pitchfork," said Piers.

"Show him."

Evander crossed the floor and stood behind the prince.

He reached around, set his hand over Florian's, and moved the thumb into place.

Florian's whole back went still against his chest.

Evander felt him swallow.

"Like this," he said, low.

"Loose here.

"Firm here."

"Mm," said Florian.

"Say it again.

"More slowly."

Piers sighed deeply and walked to the door.

"I'll be in the yard," he said.

"Losing at dice.

"Please don't stab each other."

The door closed, and the echo died.

Florian let the sword clatter on the table and turned around inside Evander's arms.

"He knows," said Evander.

"Piers has known since the autumn.

"I think he had a wager."

"On what?"

"On how long it would take you to look at me," said Florian.

His hands slid up Evander's chest to his collar.

Evander was breathing hard, and he hadn't done anything yet.

"I'm supposed to hate you," he said.

"Keep trying."

"It's not working."

"I know," said Florian, with a wicked, helpless smile.

"Isn't it awful?"

Evander kissed him.

He picked the prince up by the hips and set him on the edge of the long oak table.

Florian locked his legs around Evander's waist and kissed him back, wet and hungry.

Evander tipped the prince's head and kissed down his throat.
