Chapter 18: Door to Door
My advisor called while I was still on the ledge, with Margie's coffee going cold in my hand.
He didn't say hello.
"Abbie, what on earth is going on out there?"
"Good morning."
"There's a criminal complaint with your name on it. The station's lawyer called the dean at seven."
"Did the station's lawyer mention the camera card?"
He was quiet.
"What camera card?"
"The one where Lewis Barrows cuts my air hose," I said. "Nine years ago. In the north cove."
The silence went on so long I checked the phone.
"I can't be part of this," he said finally. "The station hosts half our field students. I'm stepping down as your advisor. I'd suggest you take a leave."
"I'm not taking a leave."
"Then you're doing it alone."
"I've been doing it alone since April," I said, and hung up.
Margie had been listening to every word, with her hands in her bib pockets.
"Who was that?"
"My advisor. Ex-advisor."
"Want me to sink him?"
"He lives in Orono, Margie."
"I've got a cousin with a truck."
I laughed, and it came out wet, and she pulled me into a hug that smelled of bait and coffee.
"Petition," she said into my hair. "That's what's left. Two hundred names by the fifteenth."
"I've got sixty-one."
"Then we'd better start knocking."
Barrows had told the county I'd stolen a two-million-dollar specimen.
He couldn't produce a picture of it.
All he had was a brief clip of a black tail splashing in a tank, and the internet had already decided it was a cheap fake.
The reporters camped at the store started asking him what exactly he'd lost.
He stopped answering.
So I went door to door.
There was one catch.
Minnow insisted on coming, and she could only walk after dark.
"Nobody answers the door at nine at night on an island, Minnow."
