Chapter 21: The Trade
I got down on the concrete with him.
"Tell me," I said.
"She came to the basin at dusk. She took Minnow by the hair in front of the pod." His voice shook. "I went for her, and the whole pod held me down. They're afraid of her. They've always been afraid of her."
"Where is she?"
"Under the bluff. At the foot of it, on the rock where the seals haul out."
"What does she want?"
He looked at me, and I knew before he said it.
"You," he said. "Alone. Tonight. Or she drowns Minnow at the turn of the tide."
Margie made a sound like she'd been punched.
The woman with the dog was still staring at Jet's bare chest.
Margie turned around and stared at her until she walked away.
Margie's cousin came for us at nine in an old wooden boat that smelled of gas.
He took one look at Jet and decided not to ask.
Jet didn't ride.
He went back into the bay off the ferry ramp and swam beside us the whole way, a pale shape under the bow wave.
We came into the north cove at half past ten.
The moon was three nights from full.
It lay on the water in a long white road that ran straight to the foot of the bluff.
At the end of the road, a woman sat on the seal rock with her tail in the sea.
I zipped my drysuit up to my chin on the deck of Margie's cousin's boat.
No tank. No light. Just my mask and my fins.
"Absolutely not," Margie said.
"She said alone."
"She said a lot of things. She's a liar. Jet said so."
"She's got Minnow."
Margie looked at the rock.
Then she took the flare gun out of her bibs and checked it.
"If she so much as touches your hair," she said, "I'll find out if those scales burn."
