Odette stood at the edge of the spotlight with her mouth open.
"Mom. You don't mean that."
"I'm not your mother." Mom's voice came out of every speaker in the room. "I was a woman you were sent to use. You were good at it. I'll give you that."
She laid the stubs on the podium, one by one.
"As of tonight you're removed as youth ambassador of this foundation. My lawyer files on Monday to end the adoption. You will not live in my house. You will not use my name. You will not call me Mom again, in public or anywhere else."
The board chair stood up. "Philippa, the board hasn't voted on..."
"Then vote," Mom said. "Right now. In front of them."
She gestured at the room.
Three hundred people. Every phone up.
The board chair looked at the other board members.
One of them, a man with a white mustache, raised his hand.
Then another.
Then all of them, one after another.
Odette watched them do it, all the defiance draining from her face.
She turned around and came down the stage steps.
