Detective Keogh came over on the noon boat and stood in the cedar kitchen with his hat in his hands.

It was the first time he had been told the address.

Simon had given it to him over the phone at seven that morning.

He had not breathed again until Keogh said he understood.

"You've kept this place off every record I own," Keogh said, looking round.

"My mother's name is on the deed."

"I know whose name is on it, Doctor. I looked in March."

Keogh turned his hat once.

"I didn't tell anyone. Thought you'd want it that way."

Simon said nothing.

Eli sat at the long table with a mug of coffee and the ferry photograph face up in front of him.

He had not said a word since the detective came in.

"Walk me through it again," Keogh said. "Slowly."

Eli put his finger on the print.

"Tomorrow. The ten-ten boat out of Vashon. I walk on at the north dock with a bag and my headphones, like I'm going home."

"Alone."

"Alone. I go up to the passenger deck and stand at the stern rail."

"It's open and public, it's twenty minutes, and he's got nowhere to go once the boat's moving."

"He's got the water."

"He's not going into the water. He wants a close hand."

Eli's voice was flat.

"I know how he works. I did two episodes on it."
