Chapter 7: The Grey Shell
Simon Vandermeer had left the chair at ten to four, when the street went quiet enough to hear a man breathe.
He had been listening for that sound every night since March.
The man at the corner was the third time this week.
He wore a grey rain shell with the hood up.
He stood under the dead awning of the laundromat.
He did not smoke, or check a phone, or look at anything but the third-floor window on the other side of East Pike.
Simon crossed the road.
He had no weapon, and he did not hurry, because a man who runs at you is a man you can see coming.
He kept his hands loose and visible.
He kept his eyes on the hood.
Halfway across, the grey shell turned away from the awning and walked.
Not fast.
Simon followed.
He followed for two blocks down Broadway, past the shuttered noodle place and the florist with its chairs up.
The man ahead never once looked back.
That was the thing about Lyle Coburn.
He never looked back.
In the evaluation room, three years ago, he had sat with his wrists chained to a steel table and described the fire escape of a house in Edmonds in the same voice another man would use to give directions to a bus stop.
