Chapter 13: Eight Years
Anson was between me and the door before Lawson finished the sentence.
"Stay here," he said, very low. "Stay by the chest."
"It's my barn," I said.
"I know whose barn it is."
I pulled my shirt down and picked up my father's gavel from the saddle blanket.
I put the logbook back in the chest and shut the lid, and I stood on top of it in my bare feet.
Then I walked out of the tack room ahead of him.
Lawson stood in the big doorway with the yard light behind him and his hands hanging empty.
He had come alone.
I looked past him, and the Buick was nowhere in the gravel, only his own truck with the door open and the dome light on.
"Where's your father?" I said.
"In the car at the end of the drive."
"Why isn't he here?"
"Because he sent me," Lawson said. "Because he knows you'd shut the door on him."
"I'd shut it on you."
"I know."
His voice cracked on it, and he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
He was sober.
I had not seen him sober in the evening since the day he proposed.
"I'm not going to take it," Lawson said. "I came to say that. I'm supposed to carry out a brass chest like a delivery boy, and I won't."
Anson came up beside me.
He stood a little behind my shoulder, not touching, and he did not say a word.
"Then why are you here?" I said.
"Because he'll come in himself in ten minutes, and I wanted you to hear it from me first."
He swallowed.
"I proposed to you because he told me to, Detty. Five months ago. He said Bram Marchant's girl would need looking after, and that a Pelham in the house would keep the barn quiet."
