Detty's POV
"Say yes," Honorine said.
"I haven't said anything," I said.
"You will. You've got your father's face on."
We were in her dining room on Tradd Street at nine in the morning, the three of us, with a pot of coffee and a plate of benne wafers nobody had touched.
Anson sat at the foot of the table in a plain grey shirt with no ring on his hand.
Luc's chair stood empty between us, with its plate and its folded napkin.
I had told them what the phone said.
The Charleston Library Society holds a spring benefit every year in its great reading room on King Street, for the bar, the bench, the bank and the press.
They sell a dozen lots for charity, and the last lot goes under the gavel of a guest auctioneer.
This year the judge had put my name on the program.
I had the president's text in front of me.

"It's a trap," Anson said.
"Of course it's a trap," I said.
"He wants you in a room where he can watch you."
"He wants me in a room where he can watch me not open the chest."
"Then you don't go," Anson said.
