Chapter 10: Candlelight
Gunnar found the candles in the second drawer by the stove, where Ingrid had always kept them.
He lit six and set them along the kitchen counter.
The wind howled against the north windows, and the old house groaned in every joint.
Henrik fed the woodstove until it roared.
"Bring the mattress," I said.
"What?" Jussi said.
"Mine, from my room. It's freezing in there, and it's warm in here."
They looked at me for a second.
Then Jussi and Henrik hauled my grandmother's mattress down the hall and dropped it on the kitchen floor in front of the stove.
We piled quilts on it until it was a nest.
I stood in the flickering light with a blanket around my shoulders, and I let it fall.
"Nobody put anything on," I said.
"Not tonight."
Jussi laughed softly.
Nobody put anything on.
The stove threw red light over the three of them.
It showed the long lines of Gunnar's chest, Jussi's broad shoulders and Henrik's lean flanks.
I knelt on the mattress in front of the fire.
The heat of the stove lay on my bare back, and the three of them stood over me, waiting.
I took Jussi's hand and kissed the stub of his little finger.
I ran my palm up Henrik's stomach and felt it tighten under the dark hair.
I laid my cheek against Gunnar's thigh and breathed him in, soap and salt and wool smoke.
Nobody spoke.
I could hear the wind, and the stove, and three men trying to breathe evenly.
"Gunnar," I said.
"Sit."
He sat on the edge of the mattress.
His eyes were shadowed, and his hands lay very still on his knees.
"Jussi," I said.
"Next to him."
Jussi dropped beside him on the quilts, grinning.
I knelt between their knees and looked up at the two of them, side by side, both hard, both watching me.
"I want to taste you," I said.
"Both of you. I want to take my time."
"God," Jussi said, softly.
Gunnar said nothing.
His hand came up and touched my face.
"Close your eyes," I told him.
"Let me do it. You don't have to do anything."
His eyes held mine for a long moment.
Then they closed.
I saw his shoulders come down, one at a time, and I understood what it cost him.
