Chapter 24: Midsummer
The last frame went down on the floor of my grandmother's room at ten past eleven.
Henrik tightened the final bolt with the heel of his hand.
The platform ran wall to wall, cedar and low, with four mattresses laid on it side by side.
Gunnar's was gray.
Jussi's was patched.
Henrik's was narrow, and Ingrid's old one was in the middle, with the wedding quilt spread across all of it.
My hair smelled of bonfire smoke, and so did theirs.
That afternoon I had watched the hull go down the slip with her name in blue across her stern.
A bottle of aquavit had broken on her bow.
I had cried in front of two thousand people, and the three of them had held me up.
Now the beds were in my room, and the door was shut.
"Finished," said Henrik.
"It's a very large bed," Jussi said, with deep reverence.
"It's ours," I said.
I stood in the middle of it in my festival dress, a green one with a white lace collar.
I looked at the three of them in the lamplight.
Their hair was still wild from the wind on the pier.
Gunnar had a burn on his sleeve from the fire.
Jussi had flowers stuck behind his ear, in the red-brown tangle of his hair, and he did not know.
"Get on it," I said. "All of you."
They climbed up on the quilt.
I knelt in front of them and started with the buttons of Gunnar's shirt.
"Slowly," I said.
"Tonight there's no one at the door and no one at the bank. Nobody leaves the table. We have the whole night and every other night."
I undressed Gunnar, and I kissed each place the shirt uncovered.
I kissed the long scar across his ribs.
I undressed Jussi, and I took the flower out of his hair and laid it on the pillow.
I undressed Henrik last, and when his shirt came off I put my mouth on the pencil callus on his left middle finger.
Then they undressed me.
Three pairs of hands, unhurried, unzipping the green dress down my back, drawing it over my head, unhooking, peeling, kissing every inch they uncovered.
