I put him on the dish machine at six the next morning.
"There's a trick to the door," I said.
"What's the trick?"

He figured it out by Thursday.
He washed every plate, every pan, every coffee cup the diner put through, from six to eleven, six days a week.
He didn't ask for an apron. He wore a trash bag with holes cut in it, until Orsola got tired of looking at him and bought him a rubber one in Machias.

Livio held up the plate.
"Where?"

Lina just called him by grabbing his ear whenever he bent over the laundry basket.
In the afternoons, when the diner closed, he went down to the water with his mother.
