Chapter 8: The Clinic Wing

Harbor Fertility Center took up the fourth and fifth floors of a glass building on Michigan Avenue.

Five years ago, Chase and I had sat in its waiting room with a clipboard.

We had signed forms for the six embryos we were about to freeze.

I walked in on Monday morning with Eli beside me and a driver's license in my hand.

By the elevator there was a brass plaque. The Ardmore Family Wing.

I had walked past it twice that day five years ago and never read it.

"Your family's name," I said.

"My stepmother's money. My stepmother's idea." Eli didn't look at it.

At the front desk I told the receptionist who I was.

She typed my name. Her face changed.

"One moment, please," she said, and went through a door behind her.

The waiting room was full. A dozen couples sat with magazines and coffee cups, and a woman in the corner had a hand on her flat stomach.

They all watched me wait.

A woman in a grey blazer came out with the receptionist behind her.

"Ms. Farraday. I'm the patient services manager. I'm afraid I can't discuss your account."

"It's my account. Our six embryos were stored here. I want to see their status."

"The account is held jointly. We need authorization from both parties."

"The other party is Chase Ardmore."

"Yes."

"Then you've already phoned him."

She didn't answer.

"I was told two years ago they didn't survive a freezer transfer," I said, and my voice carried. "I'd like to see the letter's file copy. I'd like to see the date."

"I'm sorry. I really can't."

The woman in the corner had stopped pretending to read.
