By eleven the sunroom held thirty-one people and a speaker the size of a suitcase.
Kenji counted them from the kitchen arch with a tray of rice balls, because Tilda had put him on food and herself on the schedule.
The swim team had come in a pack, in ugly sweaters.
Erik's lab partners sat on the floor in a ring, arguing about gears.
Two of Leif's crew from the union hall had brought a cooler, a casserole and a guitar.
A neighbor Kenji had never met was teaching Soren a line dance.
Overhead, in the glass roof, snow fell steadily.
The parents had gone to bed at ten, flat out with jet lag.
Kenji's mother had kissed him goodnight at the foot of the stairs and said, in Japanese, *Have a good year, my love.*
There was something in her face he could not read and did not mind.
"Eleven forty," Tilda announced, from the top of a chair. "I'm calling the countdown at the sixty. Everyone has to be holding someone. It's a rule."
"Whose rule?" Erik asked.
"Mine."
"You can't make a rule about holding people," Erik said.
"I made a spreadsheet."
"Of what?"
"Of who has not kissed anyone since September. It's a short list." She tapped the clipboard. "Mostly Erik."
