Chapter 16: The Majority Member
At seven fifty-five on Friday morning, I walked into Saltmarsh House through the staff door.
My twelve employees walked in behind me in black polos, and nobody stopped us.
The security guard at the lobby desk had worked my opening weekend.
He looked at the lanyard around my neck, which said OWNER in small letters, and he opened the elevator himself.
"Third floor, ma'am," he said. "They've been in there since half past seven."
"Thank you."
"Mrs. Ellery told us you weren't coming."
"I'm sure she did."
The boardroom had a long table and a view of the water.
The doors were glass, and I could see them before they saw me.
Judith sat at the head of the table in a navy suit.
Two investors' representatives sat along one side with their laptops open, and Judith's lawyer sat at the other.
Langston was at the far end, his back to the window.
Lydia stood behind Judith's chair with a tablet, in a cream dress.
I pushed the door open.
Judith looked up.
"This is a closed meeting," she said.
"Good morning, Judith."
"You have no standing here. The board has called a vote, and the notice was properly given."
"To everyone but the majority member."
"The board does not need a notice for the majority member's guardian, and the guardian has not been appointed yet."
"The court dismissed that yesterday," my lawyer said, stepping in beside me. "Before eleven. You were in the room."
Judith did not answer.
I walked to the empty chair at the table and did not sit in it.
"I'd like to hear the motion," I said.
Judith's lawyer cleared his throat.
"A motion to authorize the issue of additional membership interests to the Ellery Family Trust, at a nominal price, to protect the company from instability."
