Flora's POV
Langston had never in three years asked me for something he knew I would refuse.
He stood at the bottom of my mother's steps and I watched him work out how.
"One more try," he said.
"No."
"You haven't heard it."
"I heard the first word."
"Flora, please. Let me say the whole thing."
I sat down on the top step and left the space beside me empty.
He stayed standing.
"I'll go to a counselor," he said. "I'll move out of my mother's house, I'll sell the car. I'll tell the investors I was wrong about everything. We could start from the courthouse again, with the right paper this time."
"You'd start from the courthouse."
"From the day I should have told you."
"Langston, that's the day you married me because I would give it back."
He flinched.
"I never said that."
"You didn't have to. It's on your face right now. You thought you'd hidden it."
He looked at the boards of the porch.
"That's not why I stayed married to you," he said.
"Why did you stay?"
"Because you were the only person who didn't want something from me."
I laughed. It was not a kind laugh, and I was sorry afterward, and not very.
"I wanted something," I said. "I wanted you to choose me once, in a room, where it cost you. That's all I ever wanted. It's not much. Your mother wanted a fortune and Lydia wanted a picture, and I wanted a sentence."
"Which sentence?"
"'She's my wife. Sit somewhere else.'"
He closed his eyes.
"Say it now," he said. "I'll say anything. I'll say it in front of the whole hotel."
