Chapter 6: No Bride Today

I found Judith in the ballroom, supervising the placement of white roses.

"You reprinted the programs," I said.

"I did." She did not turn around. "You've been so distant, Flora. Someone had to make sure the day went on."

"My name isn't in them."

"It's a ceremony, dear. It isn't a contract." She straightened a stem. "The photographers need a bride, and you've made it very clear you don't want the job."

She said it kindly, which was worse.

"Who's walking down the aisle?" I asked.

Judith finally looked at me.

"You'll be too busy running the day to mind," she said.

I put on my headset.

"Of course," I said.

For the next four hours I did my job.

The florist finished the arch. The band tuned up. My team put out three hundred chairs and the reporters' camera platform.

At one-fifty, I stood at the back of the ballroom in a black blazer, with the cue sheet in my hand.

Langston waited at the arch.

He kept turning toward the door.

He was looking for me, and I understood why.

Whatever Judith had planned, he believed I would fix it.

I always had.

My lawyer sat in the second row in a grey suit with a thin folder on her knee.

Elias Cushing sat across the aisle from her.

He saw me, and he saw the headset, and he did not look away.
