Chapter 11: The Wrong Song

Dean drove me to the bridge himself.

He wouldn't let me take the truck alone.

"If she's setting you up," he said, "I want to be in the lot with the tire iron."

"She's not setting me up."

"Then why midnight on a bridge?"

"Because that's where it ended."

He parked at the far end with his lights off and didn't say another word.

Camille was already there.

She stood at the bent place in the rail with her coat buttoned to her chin, looking at the water.

I walked out to her across the cold iron.

"You came," she said.

"You asked."

"Fourth and fifth," she said. "Tell me both. I want all of it."

I took a breath.

I had practiced what to say all day, and none of it was in my head now.

"The fourth is the proposal," I said. "I saved for it for a year. I bought the ring from a pawnshop in Stamford and had it cleaned, and it was too small, so you wore it on your pinky until we could get it fixed."

"Go on."

"I took you to the diner. You wore the yellow dress. I was so nervous that I put sugar in my coffee four times."

"You always did that."

I looked at her.

She looked at the water.

"I mean, I'd guess you did," she said.

I kept going.

"I got down on one knee in the parking lot, in the rain. You covered your mouth and said, 'Oh, Nolly, you're soaking.' And I said, 'Will you marry me?' and you said yes before I finished."

She laughed, and it came out wet.
