Chapter 4: Marsh Road Bridge

I got to the bridge at eleven, an hour early.

Marsh Road Bridge is a short iron span over a tidal creek, with one lamp at each end and a rail that has been replaced since the night we went through it.

The new rail is a different colour from the old.

I stood at the middle of it with my hands in my pockets and waited.

At five to midnight, a car came slowly down the road with its headlights off.

It was a silver coupe, and I knew it was hers before it stopped.

Camille got out alone.

She wore a long black coat over a dress, and she'd taken off her heels.

She walked across the cold iron in her bare feet and stopped about six feet from me.

"You came," she said.

"You told me to."

"I didn't tell you. I asked."

"You've never asked me for anything in five years, Miss Camille."

"Don't call me that tonight."

I didn't say anything.

She looked out over the water.

"I wanted to see where it happened," she said. "Everyone talks about the accident, and I only know the hospital part."

"The car was coming from the diner."

"Which side?"

"The left rail."

She had already started walking.

She didn't stop in the middle of the bridge where I always stand.

She stopped about a car length past it, at the exact spot where the rail had been bent.

I hadn't told her that.

I thought, she's remembering with her feet.

"Here," she said, and set her hand flat on the new rail.
