Chapter 6: Lemon Cake
At ten the next night, I knocked on the door of Camille's sitting room.
I had knocked on that door a thousand times with a tray.
This time I had nothing in my hands.
"Come in," she said.
She was in the armchair by the window, barefoot, in a grey silk robe, with her knees pulled up.
A single lamp was lit, and there was a pot of tea on the table.
She had poured two cups.
"Sit," she said. "Not there. On the floor."
"The floor?"
"I want to see your face and I don't want to see Preston's chair behind you."
I sat on the rug with my back against the sofa.
She looked down at me from the chair.
For five years I had knelt to her. This was the first time it didn't feel like a punishment.
"The first memory," she said. "How did we meet?"
"You hit my father's garage door with your father's car."
She tilted her head.
"I did?"
"You were twenty-one. You'd just got your licence back after a ticket. You came down the shore road too fast and put the front bumper through the bay door."
"What colour was the car?"
"Green. A Volvo, old, with a wooden steering wheel your grandfather had put in."
Her face didn't change.
"Go on."
"I came out from under a truck. You were standing next to the car in a white dress with your hands over your mouth, and you said, 'Please don't tell my father.'"
"And what did you say?"
"I said it would cost four hundred dollars to fix the door and it would cost you nothing to tell no one."
