Chapter 15: One More Month
Kiera laughed.
It came out too high, and she knew it, and she did it again lower.
"Three million dollars. Listen to him. Ronan, he's been drinking."
"Two years, ten months," Brendan said. "I can show you the coin."
"He put me in this chair. He'll say anything."
Ronan looked from her to Brendan.
Then down at his phone.
The seal. The two signatures.
He wanted it to be true so badly I could see it in his hands.
"Take me home," Kiera said. "Please. I can't breathe in here."
He took her home.
He didn't look at me on the way out.
The bakery box stayed on the table. Nobody opened it.
Kerry opened the cannoli instead and handed them down the table, and the boy said Brendan's were better than the lady's, and Brendan laughed so suddenly he had to sit down.
At eleven that night Niall called.
"Mam wants a meeting. Tomorrow at two. Kiera's lawyer asked for it."
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because her lawyer says you sent those invoices and the signatures just vary. Our lawyer wants the trainer in the room."
"So I'm a witness."
"You're the only person who can sign your own name."
The Prendergast house in Milton was white with black shutters and a lawn so smooth it looked ironed.
Ronan's car was in the driveway with the engine running.
He was in it.
He didn't get out.
The dining room had a table for fourteen and a painting of a sailing ship over the sideboard.
Niall's mother sat at the head in her pearls.
Brendan sat on one side with his hands flat on the wood.
Niall sat beside me, close enough that his shoulder touched mine when he breathed.
