Chapter 23: Snow Day
The snow started at ten on Tuesday morning, six days before the hearing.
By noon you couldn't see the triple-deckers across Gibson Street.
By two the mayor was on the radio telling everyone to stay where they were.
"Where we are," Kerry said, "is a firehouse. Historically, this is the place you come to."
The chemistry teacher had driven in from Hyde Park.
The boy and his mother had come on the bus.
The teenager's father had parked on the sidewalk, and his car was now a snowbank with a side mirror.
Nobody was going anywhere.
Niall had come at noon with a bag of groceries and a snow shovel.
Brendan came at one, on foot from the Ashmont station, with his hood full of snow and four bags of ice melt over his shoulders.
"I passed six cars in ditches," he said. "I helped push two of them."
"You walked from the T?" I said.
"I don't drive in weather." He set the bags down. "I don't drive in much."
By four the power on Gibson Street flickered twice and went out.
