Chapter 19: Missing
Lawton was at Sallie's in ten minutes.
"Where would he run?" he asked Clancy, on speaker.
"North up the waterway, if he's smart. He's never been smart."
By eight the coast guard had the trawler.
A shrimper heading out at dawn found it aground in the marsh behind Dewees Island, engine still ticking over, nobody aboard.
"Then he's in the water," Lawton said. "Or in the marsh."
"I'm coming," I said.
He turned and looked at me.
I saw the no come up in his face.
"You stay in the boat," he said. "Whatever happens. You stay in the boat."
"I'll stay in the boat."
Clancy had three charter boats and two mates.
The old shrimpers brought four more.
By ten there were eight boats working the creeks behind Dewees, each one taking a different channel as the tide went out.
I rode with Clancy, in the bow, with his big binoculars.
Lawton rode in the stern, standing, scanning the grass.
The marsh went on forever.
Every hour the tide fell another foot, and new oyster banks came up out of the water, gray and sharp as broken plates.
