Chapter 31: The Sentence
The man on the boat with no lights was the man from the pier in Nassau.
The one who'd thrown off the bow line when Mariel told him to.
Libba named him in April, in a little room with the detective, her hands folded and no pearls.
He'd been living in the beach house past the point.
He'd flown up the Sunday before the airport, on Mariel's say-so, with a cooler and a boat hook.
The Bahamian police picked him up at the same marina bar, at four in the afternoon.
The bartender called me himself to tell me.
"I made him a rum punch first," he said. "I'm not a monster, darling."
After that, Mariel's lawyer stopped talking about amnesia.
She pleaded guilty to all of it on a Tuesday.
They set the sentencing for the middle of May.
I went.
I brought the baby.
People said I shouldn't.
Sallie said, "Let them look at him," and put on her good blouse.
He was seven weeks old and asleep in a sling against my chest, with one fist up by his face like the ultrasound.
Lawton carried the diaper bag.
