Chapter 10: The Elevator

I did not believe him.

I told myself that all night, sitting on the floor of my apartment with my back against the couch.

A man in a cabin tells a story, I thought, and he tells it well, because he has had eight years to practice.

At nine the next evening I was standing in Gavin's lobby in my work shoes.

The doorman knew me.

He did not ask who I was here to see.

Gavin opened his door in a sweater and sock feet, and the relief on his face was so quick and so real that my stomach turned.

"Haz. Thank God. Come in."

"I only need a minute."

"I'll make tea."

"Gavin." I stayed in the doorway. "Who was driving the car the night my brother died?"

He did not blink.

He laughed, softly, and shook his head.

"Is that what he told you?"

"Answer me."

"Nolan Briggs was driving. He was convicted. It's on the record." He took a step toward me. "Haz, listen to me. He's a manipulator. You know what men like that learn in prison? How to find a woman's weak spot. He found yours."

"Where were you that night?"

"In bed. At the lodge. Mother can tell you."

"Where was Whitney?"

"In the next room."

He said it easily.

Every word came out smooth.

I watched his hands.

They were folded in front of him, thumbs pressed together.

He had never once, in three years, folded his hands in front of me.

"Did you ever drive again?" I asked. "After that summer?"

His smile held, but it thinned.

"I told you. I get carsick."
