Chapter 9: Claim Me
I went at midnight, with my hands unwrapped.
His room was at the top of the east tower, up a stair so narrow I had to turn my shoulders.
I knocked once.
"It's open," Kjell said.
He stood at the window with his back to me, in shirtsleeves, and a fire burned low behind him.
I shut the door.
"I came to ask," I said.
He turned.
"Page nine says I have to ask." My voice shook and I let it. "So I'm asking. I want you to claim me. I want your hands on me tonight, and I want you to stop being careful."
He crossed the room in three steps and stopped just short of touching me.
"Say it again," he said.
"Claim me."
His hand came up and cradled my jaw, and his thumb moved over my bottom lip.
"No bandages," he said, low.
"No bandages."
He kissed me.
It was slow for a moment, a question, and then I opened my mouth under his and it stopped being slow.
His arm locked around my waist and lifted me against him until my toes left the floor.
I made a sound I had never made.
He carried me to the bed without breaking the kiss and set me down on the edge of it.
Then he knelt.
He undid my boots, one and then the other, and put them aside.
He unlaced my tunic with steady hands, and when it fell open he stopped and looked at me for a long moment.
"You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen," he said, and his voice cracked on it.
I pulled the shirt off his shoulders.
His chest was scarred and broad and hot under my palms, and I felt his breath catch when I traced the line of his ribs.
