Chapter 6: The Leash

The Myeongsan boardroom was on the forty-first floor in Samseong-dong, and it had no windows.

Twelve men sat around a black table. Not one of them stood when Ji-an and Tae-gyeom came in.

At the head sat Tae-gyeom's eldest half-brother.

He had their father's heavy face and none of Tae-gyeom's height, and he looked at Ji-an the way you'd look at a stain.

The second brother sat at his right, playing with a pen.

There were exactly two empty chairs, at the far end, by the door.

Tae-gyeom pulled one out for her. He didn't sit in the other.

"Daeyang's chairman called me at six this morning," the eldest brother said, without hello. "Do you know what he said?"

"That his son is an idiot?" Tae-gyeom said.

The second brother laughed before he could stop himself.

"He said Daeyang is reviewing its loans to Myeongsan." The eldest didn't look at Ji-an. "All of them. Because your new wife accused Daeyang of fraud in front of half of Seoul."

"She asked a question," Tae-gyeom said.

"She's a liability. You'll divorce her this week."

He said it the way he'd order coffee.

"Or you're out of Myeongsan Capital," he went on. "Today. Your office, your car, your people."

Ji-an felt Tae-gyeom go still beside her.

Not angry. Still.

"Can I say something?" she asked.

The eldest brother finally looked at her.

"Daeyang can't call your loans," Ji-an said. "Since Saturday, the regulators have been asking about Hanoi. Chairman Yoon is going to spend the next month begging his own board not to fire him. He needs your interest payments more than you need his money."

Two of the older directors exchanged a look.

"He called you at six in the morning," she said, "because he's frightened. Not because he's strong."
