Chapter 15: Calvin Begs

I pulled on jeans and Keith's sweater and went down to the stoop alone.

He let me go as far as the second landing, and then I heard him come down behind me, slow, and stop.

Calvin stood on the sidewalk under the streetlight with his blazer open and his glasses crooked.

He had been walking for a while.

His shoes were wet through, and he was holding the little black recorder in his fist.

Its red light was on.

"Dee," he said, and his whole face lit up. "You're real. I thought Lydia was wrong about where you were."

"Turn that off."

He looked at his hand.

"It's a habit," he said.

"Then give it to me."

He climbed two steps and held it out, and I took it and pressed the switch until the light went dark.

It was warm from his pocket.

I put it in the front of the sweater.

"Somebody took the folder," Calvin said.

"If it gets out before the prize next Saturday, they'll pull the whole announcement. Dee, you were at the coat room. Who has it?"

"I have it."

He blinked.

"You have it."

"I read it, Calvin. All of it."

He sat down on the bottom step, hard.

"Okay," he said, and rubbed his eyes under the glasses. "Okay. That's better, actually. That's so much better. You can't be upset by something you understand."

"Tell me what it was."

"Dee, it's a very long paper."

"Tell me in one sentence, plainly, out loud. What did you do to me?"

He looked at the ground.

I waited.

I had waited at the end of an aisle with a hundred and twenty people watching, and I could wait on a stoop.
