Chapter 6: The Dock Capo's Answer
On Sunday I baked three loaves of bread in my study partner's tiny oven.
On Monday Valerio Carraro was waiting at the curb with the engine running.
"I'm not taking a ride from you," I said. "Those are my terms."
"Then pay me."
"With what?"
He nodded at the warm loaf wrapped in a dish towel under my arm.
I thought about it.
"Half the loaf," I said. "That's a fare. It isn't a favor."
"Half a loaf," Valerio agreed, and held the car door open.
The next capo on my list worked at the port.
He ran the docks in Elizabeth from a small office above a warehouse, behind an enormous steel desk.
He was a big man of about sixty with a gray mustache, and he had taken seconds of everything I cooked.
When I walked in, he stood up and said, "Livia, honey," and then he saw Valerio behind me and sat back down.
"I'm not signing anything," he said.
"I haven't asked you to."
"You're going to."
I set the bread on his desk and cut it with the knife from my bag.
He looked at it for a long moment.
Then he took a slice, and then another, and ate with his eyes shut.
"That's your grandmother's recipe," he said. "Fennel in the crust."
"Yes."
"I'd have killed for it every Sunday of my life."
"Then swear that I made it."
He opened his eyes.
"Your father signs the pension checks for my boys," he said gently. "He signs for my son's place on the crew. Aurelio's book has a long memory, sweetheart. So does mine."
