Chapter 14: The Dowager's Name
I went to the Dowager at ten in the morning, when she received the ladies of the household in her private chapel.
I took Daveth with me and the Book wrapped in oilcloth under his arm.
I did not take a guard.
Twenty women stood in rows along the walls in their morning grey, and the Dowager sat on the carved chair at the end of them.
Her silver braids were pinned in their tight crown, and a prayer book lay open on her knee.
She looked up when we entered.
"You are not expected, Isaveth."
"No," I said. "I'm told people rarely are."
Lady Sabelle stood at her shoulder in pale gold.
She went white around the mouth when she saw the oilcloth.
"I came to read you something, Madam," I said. "Daveth Marrowen, Keeper of Names, will read it."
"The Keeper is in breach of the Silence," said the Dowager. "He may read nothing in this house."
