Chapter 20: Midsummer Eve
Edmar found me on the river terrace at sunset, with the whole of Hallowfen going gold below us.
He had washed the tower dust from his hair.
He wore the same plain dark coat he had worn the night of the banquet, and one hand was in the pocket.
He stopped a respectful distance from me.
"I won't ask for anything," he said.
"You said that in the hall."
"I wanted to say it again where nobody could clap."
I leaned on the parapet and waited.
I was tired. I was so tired that it was almost restful.
"I have spent three days making a list," Edmar said. "I thought you might want to see it."
He took his hand from his pocket.
It was the folded paper, the forty-one guesses, soft as cloth at the creases from eight years of being carried.
"I'm going to burn it," he said. "I wanted you to watch."
