Chapter 7: Which Pole
Lifeline's office took up half of the eleventh floor, and at nine on Tuesday morning the whole team was standing in the open space for their daily meeting.
I came out of the elevator on my crutches.
Eight developers turned around with coffee cups in their hands.
Derrick was at the whiteboard with a marker.
He saw me and dropped his arm.
"Abigail," he said. "What are you doing here?"
"I'd like my box from the garage. And I'd like to ask you something while your team is here."
"Can we do this in my office?"
"No."
Brody was standing at the back by the window.
He didn't move, but he didn't look away either.
I held up my phone and turned the screen to Derrick.
"This is your car. Level two, spot fourteen. I took this last night."
"Why were you in my garage?"
"Whose hair is that on the door handle?"
He looked at the picture.
For a moment his face did nothing at all.
"Heidi's," he said. "She drives it sometimes. It's her hair, Abigail, it's on everything."
"Why is the left headlight new?"
"She backed into a pole on Tuesday night."
"Which pole?"
"What?"
"Which pole did she back into?"
He wet his lips.
"At the market. On Hale Street."
"When Tuesday?"
"I don't know. Late. Why are you interrogating me?"
"Because on Tuesday at eleven thirty-six a white SUV with a roof rack and a Lifeline sticker ran a red light and hit my car." I kept my voice level. "The driver got out, looked at me, and drove away."
