Chapter 10: Réveillon
The French-Canadians kept Christmas Eve at midnight, and Solange had been cooking for it since Thursday.
The long tables in the Dry groaned with tourtière and ragoût and baked beans.
There were pickled beets and cretons and a bûche de Noël the length of my arm.
A fiddler sat on a bench by the stove, and a man beside him kept time with two spoons on his knee.
The room smelled of clove and pork and woodsmoke.
Mummu sat among the Finnish women in her black church dress, and she ate three helpings of the ragoût.
I wore the only good dress I owned, dark green wool.
Petroc had looked at it for a long time when I came down the stairs.
He had said nothing, and he had put his hand on my waist, and he had not taken it off all night.
Madern's chair at the Cornish table stood empty.
He would come after the carols for the vote, Solange said, to a hall full of fed and happy wolves.
I tried not to look at the door.
"Dance with me," Petroc said into my ear.
"You don't dance."
"I'll make an exception."
He took me out onto the cleared floor in front of the Board, and the fiddler swung into a reel.
He was a heavy man, and he moved lightly.
He turned me under his arm, and the green skirt flared, and two hundred wolves clapped on the beat.
I laughed out loud.
He pulled me against him on the turn, and his mouth brushed my ear.
"Cloakroom," he said. "Now."
"The vote's in an hour."
"I know how long I have."
His hand slid down my back and settled on the curve of my ass, in front of the whole pack.
A Cornish wife on the bench saw it and put her hand to her mouth.
